History of the Sharper Minds

The Sharper Minds program is based upon the work and research findings of a number of individuals, generally doctors and researchers (PhDs) in the field of education, optometric (seeing) or hearing related fields.

Various components of the program include aspects of:

  • Vision therapy
  • Auditory therapy
  • Physical & Occupational therapy
  • Sensory-Motor Integration
  • Balance therapy
  • Memory utilization skills
  • Success Skills training
  • And more
The foundations for most of these go back at least 35-40 years, and have been used with thousands of children and adults.  The founders of Sharper Minds, a medical doctor and a businessman, after working with many families, created a synergistic blend of the above therapies to produce what we consider to be the most time- and cost-effective program available today.  The therapy as a whole, will optimize results for a wide variety of cognitive conditions.

The co-founders, Delbe Meelhuysen, M.D., Program Director and Ed Meelhuysen, President, operating under a different legal entity, took their first client on board in December of 1998 in a Beaverton (west Portland, Oregon) office.  A corporation was later set up to handle the rapidly growing need.  The Sharper Minds name was rolled out in December of 2001.  As of April 2008, we have administered around 1200 evaluations and have worked with over 600 client families from 26 states, Canada and Jamaica.

The founders have been members of the Oregon-Western Washington branch of the Better Business Bureau and been on their Honor Roll since 1999 (now called Accredited Members with an A+ rating).  For their information about our company, click on the BBB Online Logo to the left and then the link to the BBB.

The story in the Sharper Minds arrow logo (trademarked)

The first part or tail end of the arrow represents the birth of a child, the parents high hopes for them, and the progress they begin making.

The crest and downward spiral depicts the struggle the child begins to experience in school and at home as the dysfunctions in their brain become more evident.  The child begins falling behind his or her peers.  Learning is difficult.  Success is elusive.

The bottom of the circle is the point at which the family discovers and begins the Sharper Minds program and hope is rekindled.

As the family progresses through the cognitive therapy program, hope grows and accelerates as the child begins performing at or above normal levels.

The arrow head symbolizes the child launching into life with the mental tools to be successful.  They have the mental flexibility and ability to learn that can take them to any of life's successes that they may choose.

Lastly, the reflections on the arrow represent the light shining on each child and adult all through life's journey, and while shadows will always be there, if we look towards the light of God's truth, those shadows will be behind us.

The arrow logo is part of the Sharper Minds name and arrow logo.  The name, arrow and combinations thereof are trademarks of Sharper Mind Centers, Inc.  Sharper Mind Centers and Sharper Minds are registered trademarks of Sharper Mind Centers, Inc.
